The Final Countdown has begun and I am beginning to feel a little more stressed about my trip. Just a little over a week away. YIKES!! I am running out of prep time. I will do one more long hike on Monday and then backing off and giving all a rest. Am I ready physically?? I have no idea LOL. I have done what I can do and it will be what it will be I guess.
I decided to do 2 training hikes at Roaring River. The first trail was the Fire Tower Trail. A 4.3 mile trail with about 400ft change in elevation. The trail started along the river and then steeply headed up to the ridge where there were nice bluffs and eventually the fire tower. The second trail was Devils Kitchen and was a 1 1/2 mile loop trail.
Devils Eye Brow and Trimble Mountain Trail is located in northern Arkansas just north of Beaver Lake. The basic trail is a 6 1/2 mile out and back trail with several optional offshoots. This trail said it had about 1500ft change in elevation but my gps showed over 1800'. This trail was continual inclines and declines. It was nice to have it mixed up and was "easier" on my legs - well a little.... It was a beautiful day and perfect weather for this very nice but challenging hike.
Join me on my Journey- what journey you ask... Why Koral's color of the canyons journey - a photo tour to Escalante, Zion, Slots Canyons and more fabulous places with intense hiking and beautiful fall color. It will memorable experience that will test me mentally, physically, and creatively. Follow me as I prepare gathering camera equipment, hiking equipment, clothing, and getting in shape for long hikes, steep climbs and rock scambling. A challenge at any age but as one getting older, a little more of a challenge.
I am continuing to get ready for my canyon tours hiking. With a 1400 foot elevation change and 10 mile hikes on this adventure, I knew I needed to find some more aggressive trails to train on. This is especially true as I need to try out my new backpack to see how that was going to work out . In talking to a friend, Doug Osborne, he said that he had hiked the hemmed-in hollow trail in Arkansas and it might fit the bill. I had read about this trail and considered hiking it in the past, but I've had so many people tell me how tough it was had never gotten around to doing it.
The journey has begun. I am hitting the gym, working out at home, and getting in some hikes. This is a sampling of what I am hoping to share over the next 6 or so weeks of my Korals Colors of the Canyon Journey. This is a 11 mile training hike on a trail called Pigeon Roost Trail in Arkansas.
I love visiting Colorado. It doesn't matter to me what season because each season has its special views. This was my 2nd year to visit the Gunnison and Crested Butted area in the summer. Last year I visited in July and there were some wildflowers. There weren't many still blooming.
This year was a whole different story. Apparently with the large amount of snow they had this prior winter, the wildflowers were much better than usual with more varieties and they were staying nice later in the season up in the higher altitudes.
So the challenge was on, where to find the best variety of these wildflowers and then to capture their beauty...
We enjoy traveling to Colorado in the Winter and often bring in the New Year there. What a great way to start the year! I didn't have a lot of time to get out with my camera but every morning I rose before the sun and headed out for a few hours. It was cold there and near single digit and a few of the mornings there was light snow falling.
